My work is inspired by the natural world and a fascination in man’s effect on nature with his belief that it can always be improved upon.
Victorian specimen hunters travelled the globe, collecting plant and animal species, providing breeders with unusual samples to examine and catalogue, which were then revealed to a public hungry for new discoveries.
Our gardens are now filled with wondrously exotic non-native plant varieties that bear little resemblance to the original parent specimens brought over by botanists.
The majority of border plants purchased every summer are hybrids, inbred to the extent they are infertile, having a total reliance on man to reproduce.
My personal journey of hybridization and plant discovery, explores the visual tapestries created via my own evolutionary manipulation and interpretation, displaying ideas in a “victorianesque” and sometimes-macabre fashion designed to provoke, stimulate and challenge the viewer.
